LIFE ON THE FORTY ACRES
With a campus of 350 acres and almost 50,000 other students, you’re sure to find something to do and someone to do it with. It’s no wonder there are more than 900 registered student organizations that offer interaction within the university’s diverse student body.
Many students participate in recreational sports by playing on an intramural team or working out in one of four gyms on campus. If you prefer the lecture and concert halls to the gym and athletic field, you can find world-class musicians, speakers and entertainers on campus. In recent years, the university has welcomed engaging speakers like director Robert Rodriguez, the Dalai Lama and former President Bill Clinton as well as performers such as the Dixie Chicks, Jerry Seinfeld, Aretha Franklin and Blue Man Group.
Students don’t have to go far to enjoy Austin’s live music scene. The long-running PBS music program “Austin City Limits” is filmed on campus, and the legendary Cactus Café in the Texas Union offers one of the most intimate live music venues in the country.

“Students should appreciate that they are probably living and working in the most diverse environment in which they will ever live—culturally, economically, religiously, ethnically, racially. Explore. Expand your social circle. And do something adventurous every year.”
