Is transferring right for you? Transfer Eligibility
To be considered for transfer admission, you must:
- Graduate from high school or earn a GED.
- Enroll in a college or university after you graduate from high school or earn your GED.
- Earn 30 semester hours of transfer credit at another college or university.
If you aren’t eligible to attend another college or university because of academic or disciplinary reasons, you’re also not eligible for admission to UT Austin.
Applicants to some majors with more than 60 hours of transferable credit are considered to have excessive hours. If you have earned more than 60 hours of transferable credit, you should carefully review your options before transferring.

Transfer options and issues
Visiting students
Students who attended UT Austin during the 2005 Fall semester as a result of a hurricane disaster were considered visiting students. If you were a visiting student and now are interested in returning to UT Austin on a regular basis, you must apply for transfer admission rather than for readmission as a returning student.
Returning students
Have you attended UT Austin in the past? If you’re ready to return, apply for readmission. When applying for readmission, you must submit official transcripts of any work that you’ve taken since leaving UT Austin.
Students who attended UT Austin during the 2005 Fall semester because of the hurricane disasters were considered visiting students; if such a student is now interested in attending UT Austin as a regular student, he or she must apply for transfer admission instead of for readmission.
Degree holders
Students who have obtained a degree at another college or university but are interested in working toward an undergraduate degree at UT Austin must apply for undergraduate transfer admission in the same way as students who have not yet earned a degree. Having a degree does not affect your status as an applicant.
Undergraduate non-degree seeking student
If you already have a bachelor’s degree (or higher), you may still want to take some additional undergraduate courses without working toward another degree. In this case, you should apply for transfer admission as a non-degree seeking student.
Ineligible at another institution?
If you aren’t eligible to attend another college or university because of academic or disciplinary dismissal or suspension, you also aren’t eligible to attend UT Austin. We do not offer probationary or provisional admission to transfer students.
Academic Fresh Start
If you’re a Texas resident and you would like to apply for undergraduate admission without having courses you completed 10 or more years ago considered, you should apply for Academic Fresh Start, an option established as part of the Texas Education Code.
Summer-only admission?
Some students who are enrolled at other colleges or universities want to take courses at UT Austin during the summer only without officially transferring. Such students are called summer transients and must follow the same application process as other transfer applicants.
