The Sole Purpose of the University
UT is the best school to attend because the sole purpose of the university is to help students become successful individuals. There are endless resources and programs made available for the students in order to achieve this goal.
Impacted for a Lifetime
I chose the University of Texas at Austin because I noticed the affect it had on alumni. Most graduates (no matter which class they belong to) still love UT the same as when they were current students. I wanted to attend a school where I am not only impacted during my four years of study, but for a lifetime.
Education a Top Priority
I grew up in a Baptist household with my mom and two older siblings. Education has always been a top priority for my family, so the question for me after graduation was not “Am I going to college?” but instead “Where am I going to college?” Though I am not the first to attend college in the family, I’m the first to attend the University of Texas at Austin. I am hoping that my niece will become a student at UT in the future. She’s my “Longhorn-In-Training.”
Britney’s advice on…
Making friends
Be yourself (whoever that may be)! Though we come to college thinking that we “know” who we are, that idea is not always true. You evolve daily as a college student. Just relax and enjoy the college experience! Don’t try to befriend someone because you think you should associate yourself with him or her. Take the time to get to know everyone who may cross your path.
Living on campus
Living on campus is great! I enjoy being close to all the resources that the campus has to offer. And trust me, when you wake up 30 minutes before class, you will appreciate it!
A particular class
Attention: If you’re not a morning person, do not enroll in 8 a.m. classes! If your first meal is usually at noon because you slept through breakfast, it is not in your best interest to enroll in early courses. Schedule classes around the time that’s best for you.
What to not to wear
Do not wear jeans on hot summer days.
How to be a successful student
Learn study strategies that are best for you and sit in the front row of every class.
Balancing studying, friends, work & family
Moderation is the key! Every aspect of your life should be equally balanced. If not, you may become overwhelmed with schoolwork or spend less time with family and friends.
Events for Every Student
My favorite feature of the university is the remarkable events and visitations of influential people that happen on the campus. The university offers events that interest every student, from the football games for the devout sports lovers to a motivational chat with Maya Angelou.
One of my favorite memories at UT was attending the Method Man concert at the Texas Union. I was excited to hear that Method Man was going to perform at UT. On the day of the event, students from all backgrounds packed into the Texas Union Ballroom and chanted the lyrics to every song in unison. It was a great experience!

Staff Members Who Care
I love the dining staff at UT because they love both their job and the students. Whenever I enter the dining hall for lunch, staff members ask me how I’m doing and offer conversation. I have come to appreciate these staff members because they really care about the students.

Favorites
- Class: Masterworks of American Literature with Professor Bremen. I am currently taking this course this semester and love it! I enjoy the way that the professor includes technology with the lectures. Trust me, this is not your average English class!
- Study location on campus: 1st floor lobby of the FAC. The noise level is just right for studying.
- Place to eat near campus: Chipotle - order one burrito and cut it in half. Now you have both lunch and dinner at a reasonable price.
- Book: Forbidden Fruit: Love Stories of the Underground Railroad by Betty DeRamus
- Thing about Austin: I love the hill country. The landscape of Austin is simply beautiful!
Scholarships
- Bernard and Audre Rapoport Endowed Presidential Scholarship
- Longhorn Opportunity Scholarship
Biggest challenge
My biggest challenge was overcoming ideas of what I “should” study. I came to college with preconceived notions of what’s best to study based on what others advised and the benefits that the major will grant me after graduation. But I have learned that this outlook will hinder the college experience more than enhance it. You should study what you are interested in! Doing what you’re passionate about is the key to success and happiness.
Best unexpected thing
I have met amazing friends! I have always been told that I would meet my best friends in college and that has proven to be true.
