Program-specific requirements for Schools & Majors
Some majors require applicants to submit additional information or meet additional requirements beyond those for applying to the University. Review the requirements listed on the college/school pages listed here to find out whether the majors in which you are interested have any special requirements or restrictions. Doing so will help you to complete all the application requirements for the major(s) you select and will help you to understand any restrictions relating to admission to that major(s).
Selecting a Major
Not yet certain about the academic program you want to enter? Take some time to review the information in the Why UT? Academics section.
- When you apply to UT Austin, you’ll be instructed to select both a first-choice major and a second-choice major. Initially you’ll be considered for admission to your first-choice major. If you aren’t admitted to that major, you’ll be considered for your second-choice major.
- Students who do not qualify for admission to either of their major choices are considered for a third option: admission to the “Undeclared” major in the School of Undergraduate Studies. Many students are admitted to UT Austin but not to their requested majors. (International first-year applicants are considered only for their first- and second-choice majors.)

Major Changes for U.S. Applicants
If you decide you'd like to request a different major after you apply for admission, you'll need to do one of the following.
- Online request: Use your UT EID and password to log in to MyStatus. From the Admissions tab, click the button that reads "Change my majors" to complete the request.
- Written request: If the online process is not available to you (it's only available at certain times of the review process), you'll need to submit a written request to change your major. Submit written requests to the Office of Admissions by mail or fax (512-475-7478); e-mail requests are not accepted. Include your full name, date of birth, and UT EID with your request. Because of space limitations, major changes are not guaranteed.
If your admission decision hasn’t been made when your request is processed, your application will be reviewed for the major you requested in your letter.
Major Changes for First-Year International Applicants
First-year international undergraduate applicants may request a major change up until the application deadline.
- Online request: Use your UT EID and password to log in to MyStatus. From the Admissions tab, click the button that reads "Change my majors" to complete the request.

Submit written requests to the Graduate and International Admissions Center by fax (512-475-7395) or by e-mail. Include your full name, date of birth, and UT EID with your request. Because of space limitations, major changes are not guaranteed.
Advising for Selected Majors (like pre-med and pre-law)
Some students pursue interests in special aspects of the major they select. Such students are able to obtain special academic advising to help them pursue their particular interests. Examples include “Prelaw” (code19), “Premedical, Predental, Preveterinary” (code14), and “Prepharmacy” (code 18).
Lists of special advising areas for each college and school are located in the “Advising and major codes” section of each semester’s Course Schedule on the Registrar’s web site.
If you are interested in special advising, fax (512-475-7478) or mail a request identifying your interest to the Office of Admissions, Attention: Special Advising. The Office of Admissions will note the request on your admissions application record. If you’re admitted, contact the special advising area to request assistance.
