The University of Texas at Austin

Most Texas freshman applicants who aren’t admitted to The University of Texas at Austin are offered participation in the Coordinated Admission Program (CAP).

This program offers students the opportunity to begin their undergraduate studies at a participating UT System university in the state and earn the right to complete their undergraduate coursework at UT Austin beginning in their sophomore year.

Coordinated Admission Program Details

Meet a UT Austin student who participated in the Coordinated Admission Program
  • Only Texas residents who apply for freshman admission to UT Austin may be offered participation in CAP. Students cannot apply directly to CAP.
  • Once offered participation in CAP, students choose from participating UT System institutions. (For 2009-2010, CAP participants could choose from UT Arlington, UT Brownsville, UT El Paso, UT Pan American, UT Permian Basin, UT San Antonio, and UT Tyler. Participating UT System institutions might change from year to year.)
  • Some participating institutions set their own admission standards for CAP participants.
  • Each institution works with its CAP students to provide housing and financial aid as long as space is available.
  • CAP students are guaranteed admission to UT Austin for their sophomore year if they earn 30 hours of transferable coursework and achieve at least a 3.2 GPA. All 30 hours must be earned during the regular fall or spring semesters. Credit for courses taken during short semesters or "mini-mesters" cannot be used to fulfill the 30-hour requirement.
  • Returning CAP students are guaranteed admission into the School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS), the College of Liberal Arts or the College of Natural Sciences when they enroll at UT Austin following their CAP year. Students may request (but are not guaranteed) admission to other colleges without jeopardizing their admission to the university and UGS, Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences.

Accepting Your CAP Offer

If you’re offered participation in the Coordinated Admission Program, you will be required to submit the online CAP agreement by the deadline to secure your space in the program. Visit the CAP Information page for details.

All students offered participation in CAP will receive an official CAP offer letter through the mail and a message about the CAP offer on their online Application Status page.
